A UK first edition, first impression. Norah Smallwood's copy, with her pencil signature on the ffep. Smallwood was editor at Chatto & Windus, Hawkes' UK publisher from 1962 - from The Beetle Leg on. The pencil marks on the copyright page of this book would indicate preparation for a new edition.
Wrapper : The wrapper on this copy is bright and complete. It has been clipped. The front panel is bright and unfaded, showing gentle surface creasing at the top edge and light rubbing to all the corners. The spine is toned and slightly dusty. It shows bruising at either end. The back panel is sound, showing overall soiling and light wear at the top edge. The wrapper is protected.
Book : The book is square and very tight. The boards are very clean and are unfaded. The corners are sharp. The spine ends are very gently bruised. The pages are clean. No foxing. The closed page edges are toned and slightly dusty. There are no loose or dog-eared pages. The binding is solid and without cracked hinges. Norah Smallwood's ownership inscription is on the ffep. A nice copy in a protected wrapper.
