Oates, Frank - Matabele Land and the Victoria Falls
A naturalist's wanderings in the interior of South Africa. From the letters and journals of Frank Oates, F.R.G.S. Edited by C.G. Oates. Publisher's original olive green cloth, with bevelled boards, stamped in gilt and dark brown. With 4 folding maps and 6 chromolithographs, 2 woodcuts, and 10 lithographs (9 hand-coloured) - all present. This copy lacks the frontispiece portrait. Numerous illustrations in the text. Publisher's lists at end. First edition. The book is bright, clean and tight. The front and back boards are bright and unfaded. The corners show inconsequential rubbing. The spine has been repaired at the head and has been internally reinforced. The pages are clean. The uncut closed page edges are sound. Some of the pages are chipped at the leading edges, presumably when they were cut. The binding is tight - no cracked hinges, no loose pages. There are no previous ownership inscriptions. The maps are clean and well preserved. A very nice copy.
