An island nation with over 11,000 miles of coastline, a mix of history, wild beauty and picturesque villages. It is made up of varying geographical features, including island, bays, headlands and peninsulas. Britain’s coastline has played an important role in shaping our island’s history. It’s a story of maritime excellence, of trade routes and invasions, of defence, exploration and ship building. Leslie Gerry has created 42 views of coastal views, painting and printing digitally, between February 2021 and July 2022. To accompany the images Leslie has used extracts of text by Richard Ayton and William Daniell from their publication of 1814 where they relate to the illustrations.
